Lap joint guide:

  1. Prepare by getting all necessary equipment: solder station + iron, brass sponge, RO water, helping hands, components (in this case, just wires), wire strippers, flux, and solder wire

  2. Plug in solder station and iron, turn on iron and set the dial between 3 and 4

Use the RO water to make the sponge damp, not wet

  3. Strip the wires by about 1/4 in. Twist when removing the cut PVC to prevent fraying of the wire. Set up the wires in a position where they are ready to be worked on, like the helping hands station.

  4. Once the iron has reached its temperature and you are ready to tin the wires, clean the iron with the damp sponge and then clean it in the brass sponge

  5. Tin the wires by adding a small amount of solder, just enough that the wires have a silver shine and no bare wire is exposed. Do this on both wires

  6. Set up the wires in a position where they are overlapping

  7. Use the soldering iron to heat both the wires, and add a bit of extra solder, enough that the wires form a solid, smooth connection between themselves without extra blobs or spikes of solder.
