AT 319 Week 4 - Georeferencing (In class exercise)

Week 4 started with an in-class lab in which we learned about georeferencing. For this, we were tasked with georeferencing a scanned German WW2 Operational map from Operation Barbarossa and digitizing certain elements of this georeferenced map. The specific instructions are as follows:

  • Use landmarks on the scanned map and a basemap of your choice to generate at least 10 reference points.

  • Digitize in a line that approximates the front line between the Soviet and German armies.

  • Create polygons that show the different army groups.

  • Digitize in points that show the location of 10 notable locations.


Final Product 1: Map with digitized locations (Figure 1).

Final Product 2: Map that includes the georeferenced map with tick marks on it, set to 50% transparent, and with a reference grid (Figure 2).
